In the story of Lan Cao's "The Gift of Language", the story talks about how it's like to be bilingual in the United States. It discusses how speaking another language can be good, but also bad. In the story it talks about how when you speak another language, you are most likely to forget about your own culture and care about them than youself.
For Amy Tan, being bilingual in the United States was very helpful but has not been easy. In one case, Amy was unable to talk to a stockbroker that owed her money because she was unable to speak perfect or clear English. Amy's mother made her make the call for her. Amy was forced to take on the roll of her mother in order to help their situation. Another case was when Amy went to the hospital for pain she was enduing from her head. Amy's mother was worried because family members from the past died from a brain tumor. The doctor of course pretended as if he was unable to understand him. Then as the daughter, Amy, spoke in perfect English and the doctor apologized and said that the CAT scans will be in shortly. Being bilingual has many advantages, but also can be a burden in your life.
Being bilingual in the United States can be a great advantage. The reason I say this is because in the United States, there is no specific language that you are supposed to talk in like other counties. Here, in the U.S. there are many languages that can be spoken, including Spanish, English, Chinese, etc. It is an advantage to be bilingual because you are able to communicate with different people in your surroundings. Being bilingual can give you the chance to experience life in a different way. In my case, I am bilingual. Being bilingual gives me the ability to get to know more people that either don't know how to speak English or Spanish.
